My Favorite Style Hack

Most of us don’t fit into one style type. Kind of like being a little bit Country and a little bit of Rock & Roll. It’s fun to think about the facets of your style and how to contrast them. Maybe you’re a little bit of a TomBoy but you also have a side that loves chic, luxurious pieces.  Or maybe you love minimalistic silhouettes, but you also have a polished, glamorous, blingy side when it comes to jewelry. I’m often contrasting my preppy/classic style with my hippy/boho side.

Contrasting styles is my favorite style hack because it’s expressive and creative. Stylists and designers typically consider creating contrast with color, fabric and silhouette to put together interesting looks. Contrasting pieces from your wardrobe that are totally different styles is another way to elevate your outfits and it will also express your authentic style.

Contrast is a basic design principle because when it’s done well, it creates balance and harmony.  Leaning into your own contrasting style with the items in your closet will add interest to your outfits and it doesn’t take much to make it work.

A silk slip dress with slides and a sweatshirt over your shoulders is so cool because it’s sultry, casual and a little minimalist all at once.

What about jeans and an elegant lace top with flats and a blazer for a date night? Add big silver hoops and you’ve got some great contrasting styles going on. The lace is chic, and the jeans and flats are classic and those hoops are a little glam. It’s innocent and “look at me” at the same time.

And of course, I love the preppy/hippy combo of a feminine sundress with pearls and Birkenstocks. So cute and the Birks totally mellow out the proper pearls!
