Fall 2023 Trends

The start of a new season is an opportunity to add new items to your wardrobe. I recently posted a blog that explained how to build a wardrobe that is strategic. You want to first build a core base or capsule of items that are quality, well-fitting timeless pieces. You then add in new, current (aka “on trend”) items each season. This is the fun part! The runways this Fall were inspiring.

Here are the five Fall 2023 fashion trends I am excited about, and have already started to embrace, And four that I’m still considering:

Designers and the trends: Valentino (Classic Pieces), Isabel Maurant (Sweater Dresses), Theory (The Color Red), Prada (Full Skirts), Mui Mui (Flats)

Full skirts

Give me a circle skirt or full skirt any day. I think this might be the trend that I’m most excited about. PS - it must have pockets.

The Color Red

I have nothing red in my closet. In fact, I think I’ve owned one red dress in my life. I can recall exactly every red article of clothing I have ever owned: When I was 6 years old (in 1976) I had a pair of bicentennial red polyester pants with “1776” all over them. When I was in college I owned the J. Crew cotton, roll neck sweater that everyone owned in the 1990’s. When I was 23, I bought an Ann Taylor red dress for a holiday party. When in my 30’s I bought a red silk cami (it was actually more of a raspberry pink). And when I was in my 40’s I bought a pair of red patent loafer flats. That’s it. I don’t know what it is about red, but I have never thought it was “my color”. That is changing this fall.

I am excited to embrace this bold color. I think it looks great with jeans (a nice balance that makes it feel more casual) and with white or camel. It’s going to be very available so if you love red, or if you’re like me and want to embrace it - now is your chance!

Flats

This is music to many women’s ears. Flats are timeless, comfortable and youthful. Adding either a Mary Jane, ballet, or loafer flat to your wardrobe this fall is a must.

Sweater Dresses

Yes to the sweater dress. There were solid, neutral colored, lux looking sweater dresses from several designers on the runways. This is one trend that is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe this Fall. It’ll be a versatile, comfortable, sophisticated dress option that can be dressed up or down. Great with boots and tights and perfect for travel.

Classic Pieces

I love it when a trend coincides with your own personal style. I feel like an evangelical stylist preaching from the mountain tops about the importance of elevated basics… and now the trend gods are behind me! See my recent blog about the importance of building a Core Capsule wardrobe. I provide a list of 25 items. This fall you can also consider adding something from this list that is slightly unique. Maybe an exaggerated sleeve on a white button down, or super wide leg or baggy jeans. Both of these silhouettes are on trend for fall but still remain classic.

There are several other trends for Fall 2023 that I’m still warming up to. I never say “never” because sometimes a trend grows on me and I change my point of view. I try to stay true to my own personal style and my initial reaction is usually right, but I am still on the fence about these next four (again, based on my own personal style). Here are four other trends for fall 2023 to consider embracing if they match your personal style:

Peplum

The Peplum silhouette is very flattering on many women. They provide a little extra coverage and room around the mid=section and look great when balanced with a fitted bottom.

Leather sets

This is one I can see myself maaaaaybe getting into come mid-October. I just find leather to be a little stiff and the idea of a leather top and bottom feels forced for me. A leather dress, however could be just the thing to refresh your wardrobe this fall… and I think I’m into it.

Sheer fabrics

Sheer fabrics are another maybe for me but they seem impractical. Perhaps for a special occasion a sheer jacket or wrap over a dress. If you’re more daring with trends try a sheet blazer or bomber - they really do add interest and feel current.

Studs

Studded belts, bags and shoes will be popular this fall. I love the studded Mary Janes from Maje because of the juxtaposition of the sweet Mary Jane and the rock & roll studs. I also like a trend that can be brought in via accessories.

The transition from summer to fall will always remind me of that going back to school feeling. Hanging up the wet bathing suit and sun faded clothes for warm fabrics and a little structure (both to our lives and our clothes). It feels good to start fresh each season and once we have that first crisp fall day, you’ll be glad you have a few on-trend additions to your wardrobe.
